“Russia’s Ambassador Outraged as Poland Confiscates Funds from Embassy Accounts: Implications for Diplomatic Relations and Ukraine Support”

2023-04-27 02:12:32

The RIA news agency quoted Russia’s ambassador to Poland as saying that Polish prosecutors had confiscated “huge” sums of money from frozen bank accounts belonging to the Russian embassy and the trade mission.

Ambassador Sergey Adreev added in his statements, on Wednesday, that this step is a “flagrant violation” of the Vienna Treaty on Diplomatic Relations.

And Adreev continued in his interview with the agency: “We received a notification from the prosecutor’s office that funds from the accounts of the embassy and the commercial mission at Santander Bank were transferred to the accounts of the prosecutor’s office.”

The Russian diplomat said the accounts contained “huge sums” of dollars and Polish zlotys.

A spokesman for the Polish Prosecutor General’s Office, Lukasz Lapczynski, said he would respond Thursday.

How does Poland support Ukraine?

• Warsaw emerged as one of the biggest supporters of Kiev, and played an important role in persuading the Allies to provide it with heavy weapons.

• Poland froze the bank accounts of the Russian embassy shortly following Russia’s attack on Ukraine in February 2022, arguing that they might be used for money laundering or financing terrorism.

• In March 2022, Poland said it would expel 45 Russian diplomats suspected of working for intelligence services.
