A state of emergency has been declared near the Shiveluch volcano on Russia’s Kamchatka peninsula due to the heaviest ash cloud in decades. The village of Klyuchi and two other affected localities were the most affected, regional authority head Oleg Bondarenko said on Saturday.

Under the state of emergency, local authorities can restrict traffic and interrupt business activity, but also expand access to aid.

The volcano erupted on April 11 and released ash up to 20 kilometers into the air. The eruption created a huge crater with a diameter of over a kilometer.

In the snowy region, a layer of gray volcanic ash 20 centimeters thick covers cars, houses and roads, regional media report.

According to volcanologists, this is the largest ash fall in 60 years. More than 3,000 meters high, Chiveloutch is one of the largest volcanoes on the peninsula, famous for its high geological activity.
