Ryan Gosling was part of many critically acclaimed and commercially successful films such as “The Notebook”, “Blue Valentine” and “La La Land”. Over the years, he has received prestigious prizes and awards, including two Oscar nominations. Here’s a look back at his career so far.
The actor was born in 1980 in Ontario, Canada, to the seller Thomas Ray Gosling and the secretary Donna. His parents divorced when he was 13 and he lived with his mother and sister. His mother decided to teach him at home after he was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
Gosling, who enjoyed performing at an early age, had his acting break in 1993 when he auditioned for Disney’s “The Mickey Mouse Club” in Montreal. He was contracted as a Mouseketeer for two years and moved to Orlando, Florida, USA starring Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
After the show was canceled in 1995, Gosling returned to Canada, but his acting career did not end. He continued to appear on various family entertainment TV series, including “Are you afraid of the dark?” (1995) and “Goosebumps” (1995-98). He also played in the comedy series “Breaker High” (1997-98) as Sean Hanlon.
At the age of 17, he left high school and moved to Los Angeles, California, USA, to concentrate on his acting career. He then portrayed the title character in the teen series “Young Hercules” (1998-99).
In 2000, he got a supporting role in the American football drama “Remember the Titans”. He was then selected by director Henry Bean to play the leading role of a Jewish neo-Nazi in the film “The Believer” (picture).
In 2002, he starred with Michael Pitt and Sandra Bullock in the psychological thriller “Murder By Numbers” (picture), in which he played the role of a wealthy student trying to commit the perfect murder. Gosling took on his breakthrough role in the romantic drama “The Notebook” (2004) with Rachel McAdams. The film turned out to be a huge commercial success – with global sales of more than $ 115 million. It not only established Gosling as an actor, but also earned him five Teen Choice Awards and one MTV Movie Award.
In 2006, he appeared in the film “Half Nelson”, in which he played the role of a drug-addicted junior high school teacher who ties in with a young student. His performance earned him an Oscar nomination.
After global success, the actor starred in several films, including “Fracture” (2007), “Lars and the Real Girl” (2007), “Blue Valentine” (2007) and “All Good Things” (2010).
Gosling is not only a recognized actor, but also a musician. In 2007 he founded an indie rock band, Dead Man’s Bones, with his friend Zach Shields.
In 2011 he appeared with Steve Carell, Julianne Moore and Emma Stone in the romantic comedy drama “Crazy, Stupid, Love” (picture). The film received positive reviews and earned Gosling a Golden Globe nomination for an actor’s best performance in a film – comedy or musical.
In the same year he also appeared in “The Ides of March”, a political drama film directed by George Clooney. The film – an adaptation of Beau Willimon’s play “Farragut North” from 2008 – played Clooney, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Marisa Tomei, Paul Giamatti, Evan Rachel Wood and Jeffrey Wright.
He appeared in the role of Sergeant Jerry Wooters in the action thriller “Gangster Squad” in 2013. He was loosely based on the Los Angeles Police Department officers and detectives who formed a group called the “Gangster Squad Unit” to fight Mickey Cohen and his gang in the 1940s and 50s.
In 2014 he turned to directing and published his debut project “Lost River”, which was part of the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival 2014. The film with Christina Hendricks, Ben Mendelsohn and Matt Smith did not go well and received bad reviews.
The actor appeared as a bond seller in the financial drama “The Big Short” (2015). The film was directed and co-written by Adam McKay and starred Christian Bale, Steve Carell (L) and Brad Pitt.

The film, in which he plays the role of a musician who falls in love with a fighting actress (Emma Stone), was awarded seven record prices at the 2017 Golden Globe. Gosling also received his second Oscar nomination for the role.

Meanwhile, it has recently been announced that Phil Lord and Chris Miller will lead Gosling’s ‘Project Hail Mary’.
Ryan will both collaborate and produce an adaptation of a new novel written by Andy Weir, who previously wrote “The Martian”, and directed by “The Lego Movie” filmmakers.
The novel, also titled “Project Hail Mary”, will be published by Random House in the spring of 2021. The filming should follow closely behind.
‘Project Hail Mary’ tells the story of an astronaut – who is played in the film by Gosling – on a spaceship whose job is to save the planet.
Gosling will produce the film alongside Amy Pascal, Ken Kao and Aditya Sood, while MGM – now under the direction of Michael De Luca – has purchased the package.
