Ryder Cup: McIlroy Questions Rahm’s Stance as Captain Donald Seeks Resolution

by Luis Mendoza - Sport Editor

ORLANDO, Fla. — Rory McIlroy expressed his surprise and disappointment that Jon Rahm declined a conditional release from the DP World Tour, a move that casts significant doubt on the Spaniard’s participation in the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor. McIlroy described the offer as “generous,” particularly when compared to the terms Brooks Koepka accepted to rejoin the PGA Tour, and questioned what more the DP World Tour could do to accommodate players seeking to maintain membership while also competing in LIV Golf events.

The situation unfolded as Luke Donald was confirmed for a third consecutive term as Europe’s Ryder Cup captain, a decision broadly welcomed by his peers. However, Rahm’s potential absence looms large, creating a challenge for Donald as he aims to replicate the success of the European team’s victories in Rome and New York. The core of the dispute centers on Rahm’s belief that the DP World Tour is “extorting” players, according to statements made this week in Hong Kong.

“In my opinion, it’s a really generous deal,” McIlroy said at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. “It’s a much softer deal than what Brooks [Koepka] took to come back and play on the PGA Tour. There’s a reason eight of the nine guys took that deal. I think it’s a really decent deal. Obviously Jon doesn’t think so and he’s well within his rights to think that way. I just don’t see what more the Tour can do to accommodate these guys to retain their membership.”

McIlroy emphasized the importance of the Ryder Cup as an event that transcends individual players. “The Ryder Cup is bigger than any one person,” he stated. “It’s bigger than all of us. We come and go. Players pass through the system. I think we should all be grateful that we have a platform like the Ryder Cup that One can play on and that we can showcase our skills and be a part of something that’s way bigger than ourselves. It’s about the team and no one player is bigger than the team.”

Rahm’s Concerns and the DP World Tour’s Offer

Rahm’s refusal stems from objections to the conditions attached to the conditional release, which would allow him to compete in LIV Golf tournaments without facing further sanctions. He specifically cited a requirement to play a minimum of six DP World Tour events, with the tour dictating two of those locations, as a key point of contention. Golf Channel reported on Donald’s comments regarding the situation.

Guy Kinnings, the chief executive of the European Tour Group, defended the tour’s position, stating that they are simply administering established rules. “My job is very straightforward, we are just administering the rules that we have in place,” Kinnings said. “It’s our job to deal with those rules that are in place, have been tested and proven to be fair. That’s what we’re doing.”

Donald Aims to Resolve the Situation

Luke Donald, despite not yet speaking directly with Rahm, expressed his hope that the matter can be resolved and that the Spaniard will be available for the 2027 Ryder Cup. “Obviously my plan and my hope is that Jon is available for that team,” Donald explained. “He has been a tremendous teammate, a tremendous player and has given us so much.” Donald, who led Europe to victory in the 2023 Ryder Cup, is seeking to become the first captain in history to win three consecutive Ryder Cups.

McIlroy playfully alluded to Rahm’s reluctance to fulfill the tournament requirements, noting, “OK maybe the Tour gets to have a say in where those events are. But I imply, I’m sure Jon doesn’t want to go to South Africa [for LIV] in a couple of weeks but he is going there.”

Looking Ahead to Adare Manor

The situation remains fluid, and the coming months will be crucial in determining Rahm’s participation in the Ryder Cup. Donald admitted that he and Shane Lowry, who are neighbors in Florida, had already encouraged him to pursue a historic third captaincy. WTOP reported McIlroy’s comments on the matter earlier today.

The focus now shifts to ongoing discussions between the DP World Tour and Rahm’s representatives, as well as Donald’s efforts to engage with the player directly. The outcome will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the composition and strength of the European team as they prepare to defend their title at Adare Manor in September 2027.
