Lisbon – Red Bull Salzburg started the Champions League group phase with a real surprise. Austria’s football series champions beat Portuguese champions Benfica 2-0 (1-0) in Lisbon on Wednesday and are leading Group D following the first round. Former Salzburg coach Roger Schmidt’s team played with one man less for more than 75 minutes. For Salzburg it was only their third away win in the Champions League.
