Sandra Toribio: The First Wichí Doctor from Argentina’s UNNE – A Story of Inspiration and Pride

Sandra Toribio became the first Wichí doctor from a public university in Argentina. She is 28 years old and came to the province of Corrientes from Ingeniero Juárez, a city in Formosa that is located 460 km from the capital, where she studied and graduated.

The young woman studied at the National University of the Northeast (UNNE), which in turn shared the student’s story from its social networks, since in her words “she is inspiring” and “fills them with pride.”

Accompanied by her loved ones, who waited for her with a sign in honor of graduation and hugs, Sandra took her last class on Friday, December 15, -with the Whipala flag in her hands- and celebrated the end of her studies that she completed through a scholarship from the Indigenous Peoples program.

“Her love for medicine and research is connected with the desire to return to her community and offer humanitarian aid,” the university expressed in a post that collected messages of affection for Dr. Toribio.

In Formosa, the Wichí People have regarding 20,000 inhabitants, distributed in regarding 120 communities.
