Sweden’s Melodifestivalen is set to welcome back a familiar face as Sanna Nielsen prepares for the final, hoping to represent the nation at the Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna this May. Nielsen, a veteran of the competition, holds the record for the most appearances in the heats since the introduction of the deltävlingar format – an impressive seven times in as many attempts. This year marks twelve years since her last victory in Melodifestivalen, where she ultimately finished third at Eurovision, and she’s eager to recapture that magic.
For many Swedish music fans, Sanna Nielsen’s name is synonymous with Melodifestivalen. Her journey through the competition has been marked by both perseverance and success, culminating in a devoted following and a celebrated career. Nielsen’s return isn’t just a competition entry; it’s a celebration of three decades in the music industry, a milestone she intends to share with her fans on the stage she feels most at home on.
A History of Melodifestivalen Success
Sanna Nielsen’s connection to Melodifestivalen dates back to 2001, though the format was different then, with only a single final. Since the introduction of the deltävlingar (heats), she has consistently advanced, a testament to her stage presence and popular appeal. Reflecting on her 2014 win, Nielsen recalled the surreal moment in the green room. “The air just rushes out of you, you can’t quite process that you’ve won, you just hope everything goes as well as possible. You’re a little shocked, but at the same time, there’s a rush of happiness throughout your whole body,” she shared. That victory led to a memorable experience at the Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen.
Nielsen too vividly remembers a moment of panic during the 2014 Eurovision final. “I stood up there and couldn’t hear the music or my own voice, my ears were ringing, and I panicked, thinking I would have to stop. Then I looked out at the audience, and everyone was standing and singing along with me, drowning me out. That’s when the panic subsided, and I realized this was a moment I would never forget. It was incredibly powerful,” she recounted.
Beyond Melodifestivalen: A Versatile Career
Between her 2014 win and her return to Melodifestivalen, Nielsen has enjoyed a diverse and successful career. In 2015, she co-hosted Melodifestivalen alongside Robin Paulsson, a collaboration she fondly remembers, noting that they are now close friends. She also hosted the popular sing-along show Allsång på Skansen for several summers, and has even served as Sweden’s Christmas host and participated in the show Stjärnorna på slottet.
Last year, in 2025, Nielsen was inducted into Melodifestivalen’s Hall of Fame, performing all seven of her previous entries. This experience immediately sparked a desire to compete again. “As I walked off stage, I thought, ‘This was so much fun,’ and I didn’t want it to conclude. So, I told my manager we had to do it again,” she explained. “I’m celebrating 30 years as an artist this year, and my manager just said, ‘Are you sure about this?’ I wasn’t, and she said, ‘Good, let’s go!’ That’s how it started.”
“Waste Your Love” and a Message of Self-Acceptance
Nielsen’s entry this year is titled “Waste Your Love,” a song penned by the experienced team of Jimmy Jansson, Peter Boström, and Thomas G:son. She describes it as an upbeat, positive, and joyful track. “The whole point of my participation this year is to celebrate my 30-year career. I want to celebrate on the stage where I feel most at home and to thank everyone who has followed me over the years. I also want people to feel like they want to dance and be happy. I want to bring a little more joy into our everyday lives, and that’s what the song is about,” Nielsen said.
The song carries a deeper message, encouraging listeners to practice self-compassion. “I think there’s so much stress in society and our daily lives that we all have so many goals and visions, which is great. But we push ourselves so hard and sometimes forget to thank ourselves. It sounds cliché, but to actually say to yourself, ‘You’re doing a good job,’ to relax, have fun, and enjoy the journey and ‘waste your love on yourself’,” she explained.
Looking Ahead
As of the interview in Sundsvall, the results of the heats were still pending, but Nielsen expressed her enthusiasm for the possibility of advancing to the final. Regardless of the outcome, she emphasized her intention to enjoy the journey and deliver her best performance. Beyond Melodifestivalen, Nielsen has concerts scheduled for April 19th at the Stockholm Concert Hall and April 25th at the Gothenburg Concert Hall, celebrating her 30th anniversary in music. Sanna Nielsen’s career has been one of consistent growth and enduring popularity, and these concerts promise a nostalgic look back at her three decades in the spotlight.
With a rich history in Melodifestivalen and a vibrant new song, Sanna Nielsen is poised to deliver a memorable performance and continue her celebration of a remarkable career. What are your thoughts on Sanna Nielsen’s return to Melodifestivalen? Share your comments below!
