Satya Nadella on AI in Microsoft 365: Excel, Agents & Future of Work

London’s ExCeL Centre buzzed with activity as Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella kicked off the company’s AI Tour, outlining a vision where artificial intelligence is deeply integrated into everyday productivity tools. Thousands attended the keynote, navigating lengthy security lines to hear Nadella detail the opportunities presented by AI within the Microsoft ecosystem, particularly focusing on harnessing the power of data within Microsoft 365 to build intelligent applications and workflows.

Nadella’s presentation centered on the potential of “agentic AI,” systems designed to perform alongside humans, automating tasks and providing data-driven insights. He highlighted the ability to leverage AI agents as data scientists, utilizing features like Agent Mode in Excel and PowerPoint to uncover hidden patterns and accelerate analysis. The focus isn’t simply on automation, but on augmenting human capabilities, allowing users to focus on higher-level strategic thinking.

Drawing a parallel to the impact of Excel macros in the early 1990s, Nadella emphasized how AI is lowering the barrier to entry for software development. “Excel is a great example of what happened with software development. Now, people who are using Excel can generate code using a single prompt,” he stated, explaining that users can now “chat” with Excel to create novel functionality powered by sophisticated AI models. This capability, he believes, will democratize access to powerful tools and empower a wider range of users to build custom solutions.

The Importance of “Precision Augmentation”

However, Nadella stressed that the creation of these AI-generated “artefacts” requires what he termed “precision augmentation.” This means ensuring users understand how the AI arrived at its conclusions, fostering transparency and trust. Rather than simply accepting AI’s output, users need the ability to interpret and validate the results, understanding their place within the overall workflow. This focus on explainability is crucial for responsible AI adoption, according to Nadella.

The data residing within Microsoft 365 was positioned as a foundational element for these agentic AI systems. Nadella described this data as a comprehensive representation of an organization’s “people,” encompassing relationships, work products, projects, communications, and schedules. “What we have is massive information, and to have what is essentially a stateful system with AI reasoning that can then translate all of that information into what we describe as Work IQ can bootstrap any agent you build,” he explained.

Microsoft’s AI Platform: Fabric and Foundry

To unlock the potential of this data, Microsoft is leveraging platforms like Microsoft Fabric, a data analytics service used to ingest and expose information from Excel, Power BI, and other Microsoft 365 applications to enterprise AI agents. Microsoft Fabric provides a unified platform for data integration, transformation, and analysis.

Nadella also introduced Microsoft Foundry, a cloud-native platform designed for building and deploying agentic AI systems. He described Foundry as providing the necessary frameworks, guardrails for AI safety, and runtime services for creating production-ready AI applications. According to Nadella, Foundry currently supports 11,000 AI models.

AI-Powered Code Generation and the Future of Work

A key area of momentum for AI agents is code generation, Nadella noted. By combining access to a vast array of models with enterprise data, developers can build AI agents and automate coding tasks, boosting productivity. He urged developers to focus on enhancing productivity within existing enterprise tools, such as Microsoft 365. “Where we want to start is in our own everyday use of information for knowledge worker tools,” he said.

Beyond the simpler applications built with Agent Builder – which Nadella likened to the early days of software development within Excel – he highlighted how IT teams are already building more sophisticated, knowledge-grounded applications powered by AI models. This suggests a shift towards a more collaborative relationship between humans and AI, where AI handles repetitive tasks and provides insights, freeing up humans to focus on creativity and strategic decision-making.

The presentation underscored Microsoft’s commitment to embedding AI across its product suite, transforming how people work and interact with data. The company’s strategy appears to be focused on empowering users with AI tools while simultaneously prioritizing transparency, explainability, and responsible AI practices.

Looking ahead, the integration of AI into Microsoft’s platforms will likely continue to accelerate, with a focus on refining agentic AI capabilities and expanding access to these tools for developers and businesses of all sizes. The success of this strategy will depend on Microsoft’s ability to deliver on its promise of empowering users while addressing the ethical and practical challenges associated with AI adoption.
