“Saudi Arabia and Syria Resume Diplomatic Relations After 8-Year Hiatus”

2023-05-10 12:06:07

Saudi Arabia and Syria announced the mutual resumption of the work of their diplomats. Riyadh closed its embassy in Damascus in 2012 amid the Syrian civil war.

Saudi Arabia explained its decision by the “fraternal ties that unite the peoples” of the two countries, the desire to “contribute to the development of pan-Arab activities and the strengthening of peace and security in the region,” as well as the decision to admit Damascus to the League of Arab States (LAS).

The statement was circulated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the kingdom on Twitter. The decision of Damascus to also open an embassy in Riyadh was reported by a representative of the Syrian Foreign Ministry to the state agency SANA.

The Foreign Ministers of the Arab League member countries decided to return Syria to the alliance on May 7. Syria’s membership in the Arab League was frozen in November 2011, following an armed conflict broke out in the country.
