Riyadh: The Ministry of Education has clarified that the school principals can take decisions related to giving holidays to schools in Saudi Arabia. The ministry’s new law allows principals to declare holidays or half-days for local weather changes and school-related security arrangements.

The Ministry of Education has issued general guidelines regarding the granting of holidays to educational institutions in Saudi Arabia. The guidelines issued have divided the reasons for granting leave to educational institutions into two categories.

The first falls under the purview of the Director of Public Education. The Director will decide on matters of common concern to all students in the region or governorate. But the law allows the principal to take the decision with the permission of the principal if it relates only to a particular school.

The Director of Public Education’s purview will include weather phenomena, road closures to schools, dangerous communicable diseases, mandatory road closures and official visits hosted by the country.

The ministry explained that the principal can also take decisions in situations such as power and water outages, emergency maintenance of school buildings and security issues.
