Sega has released its annual financial report, and in the filing, the Japanese game development giant revealed that the Sonic the Hedgehog series has now surpassed a massive total lifetime sales of over 1.66 billion units. To compare Sonic’s importance to Sega, the next best-selling franchise is actually Creative Assembly’s Total War, which has now achieved 43.4 million lifetime sales. Puyo Puyo (which debuted the same year as Sonic, 1991) ranked third, accounting for 39 million shift units. Followed closely by Football Manager with 30.2 million units, ahead of Chain Chronicle with 26 million units. Some other noteworthy series include Like a Dragon with 21.3 million units, Shin Megami Tensei with 19.2 million units, and Virtua Fighter with 18.8 million units. It’s worth mentioning that this data is accurate as of March 2023, which means with various new games in many of these franchises, the data may look very different now.
