A man sentenced to 500 years in prison in 1991 was finally released on Thursday.
Juan Carlos Seresi will still have spent nearly 30 years behind bars in a California prison.
The now 73-year-old was convicted of laundering money from a cocaine cartel in the early 1990s.
While his possible release was for July 8, 2419 according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, the man was instead able to go out on Thursday evening.
He will be on parole for the next three years.
“It’s a miracle,” her daughter, Patti Mawer, told CNN.
Even though her father had been in prison since she was a teenager, she says he’s always been a part of her life and that of her family.
“After all the prayers and false hopes, he no longer believed it.”
Mr. Seresi’s lawyers were able to secure his release thanks to his good conduct in prison, but also for health reasons. The man who has high blood pressure could have been at risk for complication if he had had to catch COVID-19.
