Palm Beach Gardens, Florida – Shane Lowry is embracing the comforts of home as he begins a five-week stretch of PGA Tour events with the Cognizant Classic. While many of the world’s top golfers are taking a break during this portion of the Florida swing, Lowry is finding motivation in the convenience of staying close to his Florida base and a course where he has consistently performed well. The decision highlights a strategic approach to managing the demanding PGA Tour schedule, prioritizing family life alongside competitive play.
Lowry’s schedule is anchored by signature events – the Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Genesis, followed by the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players Championship – creating a challenging run of competition. However, the ability to sleep in his own bed and maintain a semblance of family life is proving to be a significant advantage. “I think if it was five weeks in a row and there was no home weeks in there, I wouldn’t play five weeks in a row,” Lowry explained. “I think the fact I’m staying at home this week makes it easier. I get to drive to Bay Hill next week, so there’s no flights. I get to see my family. They get to come to Bay Hill and The Players. There’s a lot in there that makes the five weeks easier than if you’re five weeks away from home.”
Consistent Performance at PGA National
Lowry’s comfort level extends to the course itself, PGA National, formerly the Honda Classic. He has a strong track record at the venue, with a runner-up finish in 2022, followed by a tied fifth in 2023, a tied fourth in 2024, and a tied 11th last year. This consistent performance underscores his affinity for the course’s challenges and his ability to navigate its demanding layout. The course presents a unique test for golfers, and Lowry’s repeated success suggests a strong understanding of its nuances.
The Cognizant Classic field also includes Brooks Koepka, adding another layer of competition to the event. Golfweek highlights Koepka as a key player to watch alongside Lowry.
Balancing Competition and Family
Lowry’s decision to prioritize this stretch of tournaments reflects a broader trend among golfers seeking to balance the demands of the tour with personal commitments. The grueling schedule often requires extended periods away from home, making the opportunity to stay close to family particularly valuable. This approach allows Lowry to maintain a more sustainable lifestyle while continuing to compete at the highest level.
Daniel Berger, a Jupiter resident and Dwyer High graduate, is also competing in the Cognizant Classic, making his 10th appearance since 2016. According to Golfweek, Berger has battled back issues in recent years but has shown promising form with two top-20 finishes in five events this year.
Looking Ahead
As Lowry navigates this five-week stretch, his focus will remain on maintaining his strong form and capitalizing on his familiarity with the courses. The upcoming events – the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players Championship – represent significant opportunities to contend for titles and solidify his position in the FedEx Cup standings. The ability to balance competitive goals with personal well-being will be crucial as he progresses through this demanding portion of the season.
The Cognizant Classic tees off Thursday at PGA National Resort. Fans can follow the action live across NBC and Peacock, as NBC Sports begins its 2026 PGA TOUR coverage with this event. NBC Sports will provide comprehensive coverage throughout the tournament.
