Anupam Mittal, esteemed judge on the popular Indian reality show Shark Tank India, recently waded into the controversy surrounding comedian Ranveer Allahbadia’s appearance on Samay Raina’s show “India’s Got Latent.” While Mittal unequivocally condemned Allahbadia’s comments as “unacceptable” and “messy,” he also articulated a broader critique of the digital landscape, arguing that both Raina and Allahbadia are, in essence, victims of an algorithmic system that prioritizes shock value and virality.
Mittal took to LinkedIn to express his views, stating, “Summon YouTube to the High Court too, why just Ranveer and Apoorva? See, what happened was messy, crass, and undeniably wrong. The statements & language used are totally unacceptable in any civilized society. But before we get all sanskari & load up our guns, let’s understand what the real issue is.”
He further explained, “India’s got Latent wasn’t some Satyamev Jayate ka lost episode > it was always about insults, vulgarity, irreverence & shock. Like it or hate it, that was the show 🤷🏻 So, when the host & guests cross the line, can we get scandalized? That’s literally the algorithmic jackpot from their perspective.”
“I personally think Ranveer,Apoorva,Samay et all are actually victims caught in an endless cycle of provocation for their relevance and survival,” Mittal asserted, adding,“The real culprits are ‘big-tech’ who take cover under digital intermediary laws that allow them to flout all responsibility & accountability. imagine a newspaper or a tv channel publishing the type of content that these platforms carry with total impunity.”
the controversy erupted when Allahbadia, known for his “BeerBiceps” Youtube channel, asked a contestant on “India’s Got Latent” an inappropriate question regarding body parts and suggested an indecent act for a large sum of money. The situation escalated further when he posed a highly controversial question: “Would you watch your parents have sex every day for the rest of your life or join once to stop it forever?”
Allahbadia’s remarks sparked widespread outrage, with numerous individuals, including prominent figures in politics and the entertainment industry, expressing their condemnation. Both Raina and Allahbadia are now facing multiple FIRs.
Mittal’s stance highlights the ongoing debate surrounding the responsibility of social media platforms in curbing harmful content and protecting creators from the pressure to attract viewers through controversial means. His call for accountability extends beyond individual creators, aiming to address the broader structural issues within the digital landscape that incentivize sensationalism and potentially exploit vulnerable individuals.

Anupam Mittal: The Broader Issue behind the Samay Raina and Ranveer Allahbadia Controversy
An interview with Anupam mittal, Shark Tank India Judge
Archyde had the opportunity to speak with renowned entrepreneur and Shark Tank India judge Anupam Mittal about the recent controversy involving comedian Ranveer Allahbadia and show host Samay Raina. Mittal’s LinkedIn post sparked a thought-provoking conversation on the digital landscape and the pressure to attract viewers through controversy.
Archyde: You’ve been quite vocal about the Samay Raina and ranveer Allahbadia controversy. What ignited your response?
“I condemn their actions, but we must look beyond the individuals to understand the ecosystem that led to this.”
Anupam Mittal: “While their actions were inappropriate, I believe we’re missing the bigger picture. We have an ecosystem that incentivizes controversy for views and engagement. Samay, Ranveer, and Apoorva are not anomalies; they’re products of this system.”
Why do you think big tech platforms are the ‘real culprits’ in this situation?
“Big tech takes refuge behind intermediary laws, dodging duty and accountability. Imagine if mainstream media pushed such content without consequences. We’d have a public outcry. Yet, online, it’s deemed acceptable as it’s ‘just the internet.'”
How do you suggest we address this issue? Is it solely the platforms’ responsibility to regulate content?
“It’s a shared responsibility. Platforms need stricter guidelines and better enforcement. Creators should self-regulate, remembering their reach comes with responsibility. And civilians should report antivotal content. Lastly, laws must keep pace with technology.
“We can’t police every video, but we can create an environment that discourages exploitation for views.”
Do you believe the current digital landscape is driving creators to extreme content for survival?
“Absolutely. When virality is rewarded, creators feel pressure to push boundaries. We’ve seen this in the west, and India’s no exception. It’s a vicious cycle we need to break.”
What role do you think AI and machine learning could play in detecting and policing harmful content?
“AI and ML can help flag problematic content, but they can’t replace human judgment. We need a balance – tech for flagging and humans for final decisions. Plus, transparent algorithms can definitely help creators understand what’s acceptable.”
“Creators, remember the power of responsible content. You can be prosperous without crossing boundaries.Viewers, use your voice – report, engage in discussions, and demand better content. Together,we can reshape our digital landscape.”
