Certainly, it was “only” the Continental Cup, the second level of competition behind the World Cup. But finding Simon Ammann on the top step of a podium is enough to make him smile. Especially since the quadruple Olympic champion won over the prestigious Bergiselschanze in Innsbruck, during one of the two events of the day. He had previously taken 11th place in the first competition.
By climbing on a first winter podium, all levels combined, for more than three years and a 3rd place in the Ski Flying World Cup, Simon Ammann is full of confidence. He also managed three excellent jumps in the Tyrolean capital, missing only his second round of the first competition. The Toggenburg jumper also won the first success of his career in Austria at the age of 39!
If Simon Ammann was present in Innsbruck, it is because he had decided to ignore the weekend World Cup events which are held in Zakopane. Not brilliant, the Swiss team composed of Andreas Schuler, Sandro Hauswirth, Dominik Peter and Gregor Deschwanden took 8th place. On their home soil, Poland were beaten by Austria, who were able to count on a very solid Daniel Huber.
