In 1819, Stamford Raffles took control of Singapore to make it a trading post. He brought in, willingly or by force, an Asian workforce: merchants hoping to get rich, volunteers fleeing poverty and prisoners forced into forced labor. These formerly ostracized minorities constitute the cement of this State which has become one of the richest in the world.
