Singapore Infant Formula Recall: No New Cereulide Cases Reported | SFA & CDA Update

Singapore’s health authorities have expanded infant formula recalls due to the presence of cereulide toxin, a neurotoxin that can cause vomiting and neurological symptoms. The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) announced the recall of two additional products on Saturday, bringing the total number of affected batches to nine.

The newly recalled products are Nature One Dairy Premium Toddler Milk Formula and an additional batch of a previously identified product, according to a statement released by the SFA and the Communicable Diseases Agency (CDA). Earlier recalls involved products from several brands, including those manufactured by Nestle.

Nestle has stated it is cooperating with the SFA and has removed affected products from stores, urging consumers to heed the advisory. The SFA and CDA have clarified that the implicated batches represent approximately 5 percent of Singapore’s total imported infant formula supply, characterizing them as a “minority” of products available.

Authorities reported three confirmed cases of infants experiencing mild symptoms potentially linked to cereulide exposure as of January 30th. All three infants have since recovered. No new cases have been reported since that date. The SFA and CDA emphasized that definitive clinical laboratory tests to confirm cereulide poisoning are currently unavailable.

The Communicable Diseases Agency is collaborating with the SFA and medical practitioners to actively monitor for potential cases of cereulide poisoning in children. Consumers who have purchased the recalled products are advised not to feed them to their children. Parents of children who have consumed the affected formulas and are exhibiting signs of illness are urged to seek immediate medical attention. Consumers can contact the point of purchase for further information regarding the recall.

The authorities noted that the formula intended for children over one year old represents a “negligible portion” of the overall market, with readily available alternatives. The SFA and CDA initially issued a recall notice in January, prompting the ongoing investigation and expansion of the affected product list.
