Singapore Photographer, 59, Reveals Secrets to Age-Defying Fitness & Diet

For most people, turning 60 is a quiet milestone. But for Singaporean celebrity fashion photographer Chuando Tan, it’s a moment attracting significant attention, fueled by his remarkably youthful appearance and a growing online following. Tan, who will turn 60 on March 3, boasts over 1.7 million followers on Instagram and 69,000 on the Chinese social media app Xiaohongshu, a testament to his enduring appeal.

Tan acknowledges the buzz surrounding the upcoming birthday, stating, “People make a big deal about turning 60. To me, it’s just another birthday.” Despite his modest assessment, his physique and age-defying looks have captivated audiences, leading to widespread fascination with his lifestyle and wellness practices. The photographer, a former model, emphasizes the importance of maintaining vitality as a key component of healthy aging.

The secret to Tan’s youthful vitality isn’t a quick fix, but rather decades of disciplined habits. He began prioritizing fitness and healthy eating in his early 20s, after completing national service. Contrary to assumptions, he doesn’t spend every waking moment at the gym. “People think I’m always exercising, but that’s not true. I’m a human being. I get lazy too,” he admits with a laugh. He incorporates periods of three to six months where he focuses on light cardio and basic movements, rather than intense workouts.

However, diet is non-negotiable. “I watch what I consume and position into my body, which I think is really essential,” Tan explains. “That contributes to how well you age and your vitality.” He prioritizes whole, unprocessed foods, opting for ingredients in their simplest form – steak or chicken breast over processed patties, and whole vegetables over heavily seasoned dishes.

His home cooking is deliberately simple, often utilizing a rice cooker with minimal oil, primarily organic extra virgin olive oil. In fact, he consumes olive oil so regularly he even takes it as a shot, usually paired with boiled eggs. His daily diet includes staples like honey, blueberries, garlic, and onions, all chosen for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. While he allows himself indulgences, he enjoys durians in moderation.

A Pragmatic Approach to Fitness

Tan’s exercise philosophy is equally pragmatic. He aims for five compound workouts per week – including dumbbell squats, deadlifts, bench presses, pull-ups, and overhead presses – combined with cardio on the treadmill. Realistically, he manages around three 90-minute sessions. He cautions against “ego lifting” and overloading joints, particularly as he ages, stressing the importance of strengthening the lower body. “When you cannot walk, everything will just go downhill,” he says.

Looking ahead to 2026, Tan, who is single, jokingly suggests he’s already considering retirement. “I just want to sit down, take a step back and enjoy a healthy life, and do what I like,” he shares. While photography remains a passion, he’s becoming more selective about projects, choosing those that genuinely interest him.

Tan released his Chinese-language self-aid photo book, In Life, You Don’t Have To Win Every Time, in 2023, and hints at a new creative project in the works. He’s also intrigued by Hyrox, a global functional fitness race gaining popularity among younger demographics. Though initially hesitant to join a new community, he sees it as a personal challenge to test his stamina and endurance.

As for the year ahead, Tan notes a forecast for the Year of the Fire Horse, predicting harsh conditions and natural disasters, but also a particularly fortunate year for those born in 1966. “That’s what I was told. We will have to spot about that,” he adds.

Chuando Tan’s journey highlights the power of consistent, mindful living. His story isn’t about achieving an impossible standard of youth, but about prioritizing vitality and well-being throughout life. As he continues to inspire his growing fanbase, his approach to health and longevity offers a compelling example for those seeking to age gracefully and live fully.
