The local tennis fans still have to be patient: Although Jannik Sinner and Andreas Seppi will serve at the ATP 250 tournament in Atlanta from next Monday, the two South Tyrolean tennis stars will not be doubles.
July 22, 2021
Jannik Sinner and his role model Andreas Seppi have often emphasized that they would love to compete in doubles together once. So far, this has not happened – also because the two tennis stars have almost never taken part in the same tournaments. This was the case only once in the current season, namely at the Great Ocean Road Open, which served as a preparatory tournament for the Australian Open. Starting next week, the veteran and the youngster will be back in action at the same tournament in Atlanta – but the hoped-for double will not happen.
When the so-called entry lists were created for the registration, Seppi was not sure of a place in the individual main field due to his ranking. It was therefore uncertain whether the world ranking 87. would even travel to play qualifying. This problem has now become superfluous, as the 37-year-old is in the main field thanks to several cancellations. The registration deadline for the double has now passed. Although the two South Tyroleans could have asked the organizers for a wildcard, Sinner signed up for the doubles with Reilly Opelka.
Duel in singles?
Nevertheless, the local fans in Atlanta could get their money’s worth. Namely when the two South Tyroleans would face each other in an ATP match for the first time. There are chances to do so, because Sinner is very likely to be number 2. Seppi, on the other hand, is not seeded, so the duel could already take place in the first round. The draw will provide clarity on this.
