Sion to Become a Leader in Electric Public Transport: Entire Bus Fleet Electrified by 2024

2023-09-12 13:06:14

The city of Sion will run entirely electric on its public transport network by the end of 2024. The bus fleet will be completely renewed with the purchase of 20 electric vehicles. The depot will be equipped with five charging stations. CarPostal will invest 15 million francs in total.

“Sion will thus be one of the first cities with an entirely electric bus network. With this project, the City and CarPostal are making a strong commitment to reducing CO2 emissions,” the two parties wrote in a joint press release on Tuesday.

The new buses produced will be able to run all day, without requiring charging during operation.

Significant reduction in CO2 emissions

“The new fleet will be powered by local and sustainable electricity. We will thus be able to reduce our CO2 emissions by 1,000 tonnes per year, while improving the comfort of users and local residents with much quieter buses,” explains Christian Bitschnau, municipal councilor in charge of town planning and mobility, quoted in the press release.

Sédun buses, operated by CarPostal, transport around 1.8 million passengers per year (urban and school transport) and cover 1 million kilometers.
