Sleaford Mods Brixton Show: Orbital, Gwendoline Christie & More Join Setlist

Sleaford Mods delivered a standout performance at London’s Brixton Academy on March 7th, capping off their UK and Ireland tour in support of their latest album, ‘The Demise Of Planet X.’ The show wasn’t just a celebration of their own music, but a collaborative spectacle featuring a diverse lineup of guests, including electronic music pioneers Orbital, Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie and vocalist Sue Tompkins of Life Without Buildings.

The evening began with a DJ set from Orbital, who curated a mix featuring artists like Kneecap and Fontaines D.C. Sleaford Mods later joined Orbital onstage for a rendition of “Dirty Rat,” a track originally released on Orbital’s 2023 album, ‘Optical Delusion.’ This collaboration highlighted the shared musical ground between the two acts and set the stage for a night of unexpected pairings.

During their own set, Sleaford Mods continued the collaborative spirit, inviting a host of artists who contributed to ‘The Demise Of Planet X’ to share the stage. Christie joined them for a performance of “The Good Life,” while Tompkins lent her vocals to “No Touch.” Nottingham-based artists Liam Bailey and Snowy also made appearances, performing “Flood The Zone” and “Kill List” respectively.

The band also shared a post-show message on X, thanking Brixton Academy, Heartworms, Orbital, and all the guest performers. They announced their next destination: Europe.

Jason Williamson on Collaboration and Inspiration

Prior to the release of ‘The Demise Of Planet X,’ Sleaford Mods vocalist Jason Williamson spoke to NME about the album’s collaborative process. He described Tompkins as an “absolutely fantastic” artist, admitting he was unfamiliar with her previous work with Life Without Buildings before being introduced to it by Rough Trade. He praised her unique vocal style, comparing it to the work of Björk’s ‘Debut’ album.

Williamson also shared his surprise and delight at connecting with Gwendoline Christie. He recounted how she initially reached out to the band on Instagram, leading to a collaboration that he described as a testament to her “singular, powerful” presence and passion for both acting and fashion. He noted that Christie readily agreed to contribute to a song after declining an invitation to appear in a music video, and delivered her part in a single take.

‘The Demise Of Planet X’ received a four-star review from NME, with the publication praising the album’s inventive imagery and musical ambition. The review highlighted how the album avoids stagnation, with Williamson’s lyrics maintaining a “powerless rage” balanced with humor and honesty, while Andrew Fearn’s production adds “flashes of genre-clashing colour and light.”

Sleaford Mods’ recent performance at Brixton Academy underscored their willingness to experiment and collaborate, creating a unique live experience that blended their signature sound with the talents of a diverse group of artists. As they move on to their European tour, fans can anticipate further surprises and a continuation of their boundary-pushing approach to music.
