Slovakia’s Opposition to Ukraine’s NATO Membership: Prime Minister Robert Fico’s Veto Power and Political Standoff

Slovakia will oppose Ukraine’s membership in NATO and will use its veto power to block the country’s entry into the alliance. This was stated by the Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico.

“I am once morest Ukraine’s membership in NATO,” RTVS TV channel reports Fico’s words. He added that Slovakia would use its veto power to block Ukraine’s possible entry into the alliance. According to him, Kyiv’s membership in NATO might lead to the outbreak of the Third World War.

Fico also noted that at the meeting with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmygal he would discuss humanitarian assistance, but refused to hold a press conference following the meeting. The meeting between Fico and Shmygal is scheduled for January 24 in Uzhgorod, the TV channel concluded.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, during a meeting with Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda in Vilnius, demanded concrete steps on the issue of accession Ukraine in NATO. He expressed a desire to get at least one concrete step in this direction and also demanded strengthening of air defense systems. German politician Sarah Wagenknecht said that to achieve peace between Russia and Ukraine it is necessary that Kyiv withdrew the decision regarding joining the alliance, Pravda.Ru reports.
