Jakarta – Indonesia’s newly established SMA Unggul Garuda Baru, a network of schools focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education, has seen enrollment numbers fall short of expectations, according to officials at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendiktesaintek). While the four schools collectively received 3,000 applications, the figure is considered “sepi peminat” – meaning sparsely populated with applicants – given the program’s ambitious goals and fully-funded status.
The schools, designed as boarding institutions with comprehensive facilities, aim to cultivate a generation of STEM leaders capable of competing globally. Kemendiktesaintek had initially targeted 640 students across the four locations, with a class size of 180 students per learning group. The lower-than-anticipated enrollment raises questions about the program’s visibility and appeal to prospective students and their families.
The SMA Unggul Garuda Baru initiative isn’t limited to these recent schools. Kemendiktesaintek is also transforming existing elite schools, such as SMA Taruna Nusantara and SMA Unggulan MH Thamrin, into SMA Unggul Garuda Baru transformation schools. But, application numbers to these established schools remain higher than those of the newly built institutions, prompting a two-time extension of the registration period for the new schools.
Delayed Launch Contributed to Lower Enrollment
Staf Khusus Kemendiktesaintek, Tjitjik Sri Tjahjandarie, acknowledged the enrollment challenges, stating, “I think at this time, the development is not as we hoped.” Speaking at an event on Friday, March 13, 2026, Tjitjik explained that the delayed launch of the SMA Unggul Garuda Baru schools contributed to the lower application numbers. “Because of that, the registration side only opened later than existing elite schools,” she said, as reported by detik.com.
Kemendiktesaintek plans to collaborate with existing SMA Unggul Garuda schools to improve outreach and registration processes for future intakes. The four initial SMA Unggul Garuda Baru locations are situated in Kabupaten Timor Tengah Selatan (East Nusa Tenggara), Kabupaten Tanjung Selor (North Kalimantan), Kabupaten Konawe Selatan (Southeast Sulawesi), and Kabupaten Belitung Timur (Bangka Belitung). These locations were selected to broaden access to high-quality STEM education across the Indonesian archipelago.
Eligibility Requirements and Application Timeline
To be eligible for admission, applicants must meet several criteria, including being Indonesian citizens currently in the 9th grade of junior high school (SMP/MTs) or equivalent, and being no older than 21 years old as of July 1, 2026. Priority will be given to students demonstrating academic achievement and those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Students must also be willing to reside in on-campus dormitories throughout their education and participate fully in the school’s development programs.
Specific academic requirements include a minimum grade of 85 in Bahasa Indonesia, Bahasa Inggris, and Mathematics across semesters 1-5. Applicants with documented STEM achievements curated by Puspresnas and listed in the SIMT database may also receive preferential consideration. The application process, initially scheduled to close on February 28, 2026, was extended twice, with a final deadline of March 14, 2026. The selection process involves multiple stages, including academic testing, interviews, and health assessments, with final results expected in early May 2026.
Here’s a quick overview of the selection schedule:
- Registration: February 5 – March 14, 2026
- Stage II (Academic Tests): Week III of March 2026
- Stage III (Interviews): Week IV of March 2026
- Stage IV (Health Tests): Week I of April 2026
- Results &. Announcement: Week I of May 2026
- Orientation: Week III of May 2026
The SMA Unggul Garuda Baru program offers a unique opportunity for talented students to pursue STEM education at no cost, with potential pathways to scholarships at top universities worldwide. The schools aim to produce graduates equipped to contribute to Indonesia’s technological advancement and global competitiveness.
Looking ahead, Kemendiktesaintek will be closely monitoring enrollment figures and refining its outreach strategies to attract a wider pool of qualified applicants. The success of this initiative is crucial for Indonesia’s ambition to cultivate a skilled workforce in critical STEM fields.
