Somalia Joins East African Community: New Opportunities and Economic Integration in the Horn of Africa

2023-11-24 19:42:41

Somalia is the latest country to join the East African Community (EAC) following DR Congo last March.

Reacting to this accession, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud described it as a new beginning for his country, shaken by political instability since 1991.

He said Somalia was seeking to exploit “new opportunities” offered by membership in the seven-member bloc, which agreed to admit the country at a summit of heads of state in the Tanzanian city of Arusha.

The EAC includes Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, South Sudan, Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda.

Somalia’s accession was submitted for examination by the Union last August.

The East African Community’s mission is to bring together the countries of the Horn of Africa under one roof, for the economic benefit of the region’s people and businesses.

Djibouti and Ethiopia might become members of the EAC in the coming months, if we are to believe the words of its secretary general, Peter Mathuki.
