Sonny Bill Williams Backs Dave Rennie as All Blacks Coach

by Luis Mendoza - Sport Editor

Sonny Bill Williams has publicly lauded the appointment of Dave Rennie as the All Blacks coach, citing the transformative impact Rennie had during their time together at the Chiefs. Williams, a decorated rugby player himself, highlighted Rennie’s ability to instill a winning culture and turn around a struggling franchise, offering strong support for the novel All Blacks leadership.

The former All Black took to social media to express his congratulations to Rennie, recalling how the coach revitalized the Chiefs’ Super Rugby fortunes. After finishing last in the New Zealand conference (and 10th overall) in the 2011 season, the team dramatically improved to claim their first title in 2012 – Rennie’s inaugural season in charge. This turnaround, according to Williams, was a direct result of Rennie’s clear expectations and unwavering standards.

“I remember going in the first meeting,” Williams said. “He didn’t hold back on the situation that we were in. [The] Chiefs had come last the year before, so he spelled that out plainly. But then also he set the tone for the expectations that he had in order for you to wear that jersey, to wear that Chiefs jersey. And that’s where I believe a lot of the Chiefs mana within our squad came from.”

Rennie’s Impact on Team Culture

Williams emphasized that Rennie’s strength lay in his ability to build a cohesive and motivated team. He described Rennie’s approach as connecting with players on a personal level to achieve collective success, a philosophy Williams succinctly summarized as “you’ve got to connect to correct.” This focus on culture, Williams believes, was instrumental in fostering a strong sense of pride and identity within the Chiefs squad.

Beyond his success with the Chiefs, Williams also pointed to Rennie’s positive influence on Australian player Quade Cooper. He expressed his belief that the decision by Rugby Australia to terminate Cooper’s contract in 2023 will ultimately prove to be a mistake, stating it would “come back to bite them.” Cooper himself voiced his support for Rennie on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, stating the Wallabies “let one of the best coaches in the game go.”

All Blacks Future Under Rennie

Currently coaching in Japan, Dave Rennie is set to lead the All Blacks through a busy period, including the inaugural Nations Championship and an eight-match tour of South Africa. These commitments will serve as crucial preparation for the 2025 Rugby World Cup in Australia, where the All Blacks will aim to compete for the title. The appointment of Rennie signals a new chapter for New Zealand rugby, and Williams’ endorsement adds further weight to the optimism surrounding the team’s future.

Williams concluded his comments with a simple but enthusiastic sentiment: “Man, exciting times.”

The All Blacks’ upcoming schedule presents a significant challenge, but with Rennie at the helm and a renewed focus on team culture, the team appears well-positioned to build towards success in the coming years. Fans will be watching closely to see how Rennie translates his proven coaching methods to the international stage.
