Breaking News: Sony and the NHL Join Forces to Revolutionize Hockey with Advanced Technology
In a groundbreaking move that promises to transform the way we experience hockey, Sony and the National Hockey League (NHL) have announced a new global and multiannual technological collaboration. This partnership aims to enhance the experience for fans, coaches, referees, players, and broadcasters through innovative technologies.
Transforming the Hockey Experience
The alliance will introduce several game-changing innovations, including animated data visualizations powered by Sony’s Beyond Sports, expanded use of advanced Hawk-Eye tracking technology, and new investments in technological solutions that will bring fans closer to the action than ever before.
Expanding Technological Horizons
David Lehanski, Executive Vice President of the NHL Commercial Development and Innovation Area, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration: “The collaboration with Sony, an industry leader, will help expand the objectives of our technological initiatives that involve attracting the passionate NHL fans in all parts of the world.”
Lehanski added, “Advancing the development and implementation of technology inside and outside the ice rink is a key priority for the League, and this collaboration will highlight the impact of Sony’s innovative work on several of our central initiatives, such as the NHL Edge Puck & Player Tracking and animated statistical programs.”
Beyond Sports and Sony’s Commitment
Sander J. Schouten, General Director of Beyond Sports, a company of the Sony Group, emphasized the shared commitment to innovation: “Our collaboration with the NHL is a shared commitment to innovation, creativity, and avant-garde technology. We exceed the limits of the possible in terms of sports technology to offer incredible data-based innovations, which not only redefine the way of consuming sport but also, together with the wider businesses of Sony Sports, they mark new reference points for the entire industry.”
Sony’s Longstanding Relationship with the NHL
This partnership is not new; since 2015, Sony’s Smart services (Synchronized Multi-Angle Replay Technology) have been integral to the 32 NHL stages, speeding up replays, trainer challenges, and supporting player health and safety. The optical monitoring camera system, Hawk-Eye, enables live animated views, immersive development experiences, and extended reality tools for fans.
Beyond Sports’ Transformative Impact
Beyond Sports has been deploying innovative projects since 2018, transforming NHL Edge position data into powerful fan attractions. Initiatives like the NHL Big City Greens Classic, nominated for a Sports Emmy, and Tommy Hawk’s Birthday Party, the first animated regional broadcast on real-time sports, have expanded the league’s reach among younger audiences.
