Sony Group unveiled a new virtual reality helmet for the PlayStation 5 game consoles, in furtherance of its ambitions in a market that is witnessing a huge boom.
In the first stage, the Japanese group launched the first accessory of this kind in 2016 for the famous video game device in its previous version.
The black and white “PlayStation VR 2” helmet has a forward-looking shape and is more easily carried. The price and launch date were not announced.
“We originally had a semi-finished helmet with the first model so we didn’t want to change the user experience drastically. What I wanted to change was to make the device smaller and lighter,” said beanbag designer Eugene Morisawa.
Its technical features include a high-definition OLED screen, 4 built-in cameras to track movements in space and a concussion system to enhance gaming immersion.
The device can also be modified to suit users who wear glasses. The vents also allow air to enter to prevent steam from forming.
Sony has sold more than 5 million copies of its world-first helmet with the most sold accessories in an expanding market.
A PwC study showed that the virtual reality sector generated about $1.8 billion in 2020, with an expected growth of close to 30% by 2025, bringing its value close to $7 billion.
