Sony has long been actively opposed to the multi-billion dollar deal between Microsoft and Activision Blizzardbut in the end signed a contract with the Xbox team to preserve the Call of Duty series on PlayStation consoles for a period of 10 years.
Before retirement Jim Ryan said that he was very glad to reach such an agreement with competitors – Sony was pleased with it.
“Call of Duty is an incredibly important franchise for PlayStation. Therefore, we are very pleased that we were able to reach an agreement with Microsoft to keep it on PlayStation platforms for the next ten years. This was very important to us and we are very glad we made this deal.“Jim Ryan told CNBC.
Interestingly, Sony was initially reluctant to sign a 10-year agreement with Microsoft. Commenting on the change in position, PlayStation head Jim Ryan hinted that the terms outlined in the final document differ from earlier proposals. However, he refused to go into details.
Recall that Jim Ryan will step down as head of PlayStation at the end of March. Ryan’s responsibilities will temporarily be transferred to Hiroki Totoki, President and Chief Operating Officer of Sony Group.
