Sony WF-1000XM6 Review: Design, Battery & Chip Details

by Sophie Lin - Technology Editor

Sony has unveiled its latest flagship truly wireless earbuds, the WF-1000XM6, building on the success of the WF-1000XM5. The new model boasts a redesigned internal architecture aimed at improving repairability, enhanced battery performance, and a significantly faster processor – the QN3e – for superior noise cancellation and sound quality. These improvements position the WF-1000XM6 as a strong contender in the premium earbud market, currently priced at $329.99.

The WF-1000XM6 represents a notable evolution in Sony’s 1000X series, focusing on both performance and user experience. A key focus of the redesign is making the earbuds easier to repair, addressing a common criticism of previous models. Beyond repairability, Sony has prioritized delivering studio-quality sound and best-in-class call quality, alongside a more comfortable and secure fit. The earbuds also feature IPX4 water resistance and up to 24 hours of battery life with the charging case.

QN3e Processor: A Leap in Performance

At the heart of the WF-1000XM6 is the new HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN3e. According to Sony, this processor is three times faster than the QN1 chip found in the WF-1000XM5. This increased processing power enables cleaner, richer audio and more effective noise cancellation. The QN3e works in conjunction with the Integrated Processor V2 to coordinate input from eight microphones – an increase from previous generations – to optimize noise cancellation performance.

Design and Comfort Enhancements

Sony has refined the ergonomic design of the WF-1000XM6, resulting in a 11% smaller earbud housing. Despite the reduced size, the earbuds incorporate a 1.5x larger antenna for improved connection stability. The shape has been thoughtfully designed for comfort and a secure fit, aiming to provide a natural listening experience even during extended utilize. Available colors include Black and Platinum Silver.

Sound Quality and Features

The WF-1000XM6 earbuds have been co-created with mastering audio engineers to deliver studio-level sound clarity. Features include Multipoint Connection, allowing simultaneous pairing with multiple devices, and compatibility with the Sound Connect app. Users can also seize advantage of a complimentary three-month trial of Audible Premium Plus with purchase.

The earbuds support 360 Reality Audio, although TechRadar notes that support for this spatial audio technology is waning. Other features include Sony’s Quick Attention mode, allowing users to quickly hear their surroundings without removing the earbuds.

Availability and Pricing

The Sony WF-1000XM6 is available for purchase directly from Sony and other retailers, priced at $329.99. Shipping is estimated to begin on February 24-25. Financing options are available through Affirm, including 0% APR.

As Sony continues to refine its noise-cancelling earbud lineup, the WF-1000XM6 represents a significant step forward in terms of processing power, design, and user experience. The coming months will reveal how these improvements translate into real-world performance and whether Sony can maintain its position at the forefront of the premium earbud market.
