Orlando Pirates host Mamelodi Sundowns this Saturday, October 1 at 1:30 p.m. GMT at the Orlando Stadium, as part of South Africa’s MTN 8 semi-final first leg.
It’s the match between “the best defensive team and the best offensive team”, as former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns star Tyren Arendse has called it. Indeed, the Soweto giants have conceded just one goal at home this season, in a 0-1 loss to Chippa United in the Premiership last August. The Downs meanwhile have scored 15 league goals. They have found the fault five times in four trips this season.
Kermit Erasmus, who moved from Mamelodi Sundowns to Orlando Pirates last week, will reunite with his former teammates. The 32-year-old striker will try to shake the net and put his people in a favorable position before the second leg. Opposite, the Downs can count on their striker Peter Shalulile, author of six goals and two assists in ten games played this season.
This is the first time the two teams have met in the MTN 8 semi-finals since 2011 when Pirates won (3-2, 1-1), before beating Kaizer Chiefs (1-0, ap) in final.
