Pretoria’s lawyers are presenting their case to the UN’s highest court, urging its judges to urgently order Israel to “immediately suspend its military operations” in the Gaza Strip.

On the steps of the Cape Town High Court, pro-Palestinian demonstrators held signs reading “Stop the genocide” and “Boycott Israeli apartheid.” Some chanted « Palestine libre ».

Other rallies are planned in Cape Town later today, as well as in Pretoria in particular.

South Africa believes that Israel “has engaged, is engaged in, and risks continuing to engage in acts of genocide once morest the Palestinian people in Gaza.” Comments that Israel described as “absurd blood libel”.

“This case is important to end the genocide currently taking place in the Gaza Strip”South African Justice Minister Ronald Lamola told SABC as he arrived in The Hague to support the team of lawyers.

The ruling ANC has long supported the Palestinian cause, which it associated with the fight once morest apartheid. Nelson Mandela had thus affirmed that the freedom of South Africa would be ” incomplete “ without that of the Palestinians.
