An interview with Antony English
Archyde had the privilege of sitting down with antony to discuss his groundbreaking work in the EV space and South Africa’s exciting EV journey.
Q: Antony, your Jeep Grand Cherokee was South Africa’s first self-converted electric vehicle. What ignited this passion for electric vehicles?
Antony: It was a combination of things, really. I’ve always been interested in renewable energy and sustainability. seeing the impact of climate change firsthand in South africa, I knew I had to do something. Additionally, the high fuel prices here in SA made me think, ‘Why not convert my car to electric power?’ I didn’t know it would be a pioneering effort at the time, but I’m glad it sparked interest in the EV scene.
Q: Can you walk us through the conversion process? What challenges did you face, and how did you overcome them?
Antony: The conversion process was indeed a learning curve. I had to design and fabricate many of the components myself, like the motor mount and the battery cooling system. The biggest challenge was sourcing parts. South Africa doesn’t have an established EV industry yet, so finding the right pieces was like a treasure hunt. But I was resolute, and I found ways to innovate and make do with what I had.
Q: The LFP battery you used is known for its safety and longevity. How has it performed in real-world use?
Antony: it’s been extraordinary. Despite being over a decade old, my Jeep still goes dozens of kilometers on a single charge, and the battery has shown no signs of degradation. It’s a testament to the durability and reliability of LFP batteries. Plus, it’s great knowing that if anything does happen, the battery is much safer than its lithium-ion counterparts.
Q: South Africa’s EV landscape has evolved as your conversion. What trends and developments excite you the most?
Antony: I’m really excited about the government’s recent commitment to supporting EV adoption. The proposed carbon tax and increased incentives for EV buyers are significant steps in the right direction. Also, more businesses are showing interest in EVs. I believe this will drive innovation and make EVs more accessible to South Africans.
Q: What advice do you have for aspiring EV enthusiasts and converters in South Africa?
Antony: Persistence is key. It’s not always going to be easy, but if you’re passionate about EVs and driving change, don’t give up.Also, don’t be afraid to ask for help. The global EV community is vast and supportive. South Africa’s time to shine in the EV world is coming, and I believe we’ll see many more indigenous conversions and innovations soon.
