“Spain’s Q1 Employment Report: Unemployment Rises by 103,800 While Employed Decreases by 11,100”

The number of unemployed increased in the first quarter of the year by 103,800 people in Spain reaching 3,127,800, while the number of employed decreased by 11,100 people, making a total of 20,452,800.

According to data from the Labor Force Survey (EPA) published Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the unemployment rate now stands at 13.26%. As for employment, it fell by 8,800 jobs in the private sector and by 2,300 in the public sector. The rise in unemployment in the first quarter of this year is the highest for the same period since 2020, the publication said, recalling that unemployment had increased by 70,900 people in 2022.

According to the INE, the number of employees fell in the first quarter by 23,200 people (-0.1%), the adjustment focusing on temporary employment (-117,000), since employees with a permanent contract increased between January and March by 93,800 (+0.66%), reaching more than 14.35 million people.

Thus, the temporary employment rate fell by six tenths of a percentage point to reach 17.28%.
