On Sunday August 20, the Spanish women’s football team made history by winning their first World Cup, beating the English team 1-0. The Spanish women footballers thus join their male compatriots in the ranks of the winners of the ultimate trophy of their sport, the men having notched their first victory at the 2010 World Cup.

The FIFA Women’s World Cup only saw the light of day in 1991, more than sixty years following its men’s equivalent; and, to date, only five teams have won the tournament. The United States, whose men’s team never climbed beyond third place, at the first-ever World Cup in 1930, come out on top with four wins, in 1991, 1999, 2015 and 2019 Next comes Germany, with two victories, in 2003 and 2007. Finally, the women’s teams of Norway, Japan, and now Spain, all have a victory at the World Cup. Les Bleues, eliminated on penalties by Australia in the quarter-finals on August 12, have yet to win the Cup.
