SPÖ wants to improve working conditions and ensure care for the future

Vienna (OTS/SK) – “It is unbelievable what the care workers do. We must ensure that working conditions become better. Higher pay, healthy working time models and the recognition of the nursing profession as hard work are very important for this,” said SPÖ federal women’s chair Eva-Maria Holzleitner in response to a press conference with SPÖ party chair Andreas Babler, GPA chair Barbara Teiber and the chair of the health department in the union Vida and nurse Gerald Mjka. ****

Nursing is a profession in which the majority of women are employed. At the end of 2022, the proportion of women among qualified health and nursing staff was 86 percent, 83 percent among nursing assistants and 84 percent among nursing assistants. “The high demands of the job place a strain on the health of the nurses themselves. The most common complaints are back pain, sleep disorders and burnout. “This is also because the staff shortage is so great and employees often have to step in when colleagues are sick,” says Holzleitner.

The SPÖ has presented a clear concept of how it wants to ensure care for everyone in the future: higher wages, gradual reduction in working hours, recognition of care as hard work, good pay during training combined with a job guarantee.

Health is worth investing in now. The employees deserve more recognition and respect. We cannot leave them alone to deal with the nursing shortage. Let’s implement this together and create a good future for everyone,” said Holzleitner. (End) eb/ls
