Despite decades of maintaining he wouldn’t rejoin, Steve Perry has definitively extinguished renewed speculation about a potential return to Journey ahead of the band’s “Final Frontier” farewell tour, launching February 28th. The iconic vocalist, whose arrival in 1977 propelled Journey to mainstream success, hasn’t performed with the group since his departure in 1998. Perry addressed the rumors directly on Instagram, acknowledging the enduring affection fans hold for the band and their music, but firmly stating his focus remains on new creative endeavors.
The recent surge in speculation stemmed from Journey’s attempts to reconnect with Perry for a final tour, a move that highlights the band’s desire to include their most recognizable voice in their farewell. Though, Perry, now 77 years old, appears resolute in his decision to move forward with his own musical path. This confirmation puts to rest, at least for now, the hopes of many fans who have long dreamed of a reunion.
“I’ve been hearing these recent rumors, and I wanted to speak to you all directly,” Perry wrote in his Instagram post. “Even as I’m always grateful for the love people still have for Journey, the rumors about me rejoining the band are simply not true, and I wish to gently put them to rest. I completely understand why people would hope for that. The music we created together means a great deal to me too. But I’m continuing to explore new creative work and really enjoy working on new music that reflects where I am today.”
Perry expressed gratitude for the continued support he receives from fans, acknowledging their “loyalty has never gone unnoticed.” He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Journey in 2017, but his relationship with the band’s sole remaining original member, guitarist Neal Schon, has been described as “frosty.”
Journey’s current lineup features Arnel Pineda, who has fronted the band since 2007, alongside Schon, keyboardist Jonathan Cain, keyboardist Jason Derlatka, drummer Deen Castronovo, and bassist Todd Jensen. Pineda has successfully carried the vocal torch for the band for over a decade, and the “Final Frontier” tour will serve as a celebration of Journey’s enduring legacy.
Perry’s musical activity has been sporadic since the 2000s. He made three impromptu performances with the indie rock band Eels in 2014 – his first live appearances in nearly 18 years. He then re-emerged in 2018 with the solo album Traces, followed by two holiday albums. More recently, Perry revisited Journey’s classic power ballad “Open Arms” in collaboration with Dolly Parton on her 2023 album Rockstar, and is slated to team up with Willie Nelson on a rendition of Journey’s “Faithfully” for a 2025 Farm Aid benefit single.
The news of Perry’s definitive stance was met with understanding from fellow musicians. Vocalist Jeff Scott Soto, who briefly served as Journey’s lead singer before Pineda, commented on Perry’s Instagram post, stating, “We all know where you stand, Steve. The rumors and hopes will always surface but we know where your heart is and accept it. Carry on master.”
The “Final Frontier” tour is set to begin on February 28th, marking a significant chapter in Journey’s history. While the possibility of a reunion with Steve Perry has been definitively closed, the band will continue to honor their legacy with their current lineup and a catalog of timeless hits. Fans can look forward to experiencing Journey’s music live one last time, celebrating the band’s remarkable journey through the decades.
As Journey embarks on this farewell tour, the focus shifts to celebrating the band’s enduring impact on rock music and the contributions of all its members. The future holds new creative avenues for both Journey and Steve Perry, and fans will undoubtedly be eager to see what each artist accomplishes next.
