Steven Spielberg & David Koepp: Charting the Course for the Next Summer Event Film
an Exclusive Chat with the maestro and His Screenwriter
In an exclusive interview, Archyde sat down with director Steven Spielberg and screenwriter David Koepp to discuss their latest collaboration, an untitled film set for release in 2026. Here’s what they had to say about their upcoming “summer event” movie.
An Ensemble Cast for the Ages
Archyde (A): Steven, you’ve assembled a remarkable cast for this project – Josh O’connor, Emily Blunt, Colman Domingo, Colin Firth, and Eve Hewson. What can you tell us about the story that brought these talented actors together?
Steven Spielberg (SS): Well, David and I wanted to create a story that would showcase a diverse range of actors, each bringing something unique to the table. It’s an original story, so we had the freedom to craft roles that would challenge and excite them. Without giving too much away, I can say that their characters are all connected through a series of events thatylene span time and space.
The Dawn of a New Spielberg-Koepp Collaboration
A: David, you’ve worked with Steven on several iconic films. What inspired this new project, and how does it differ from your previous collaborations?
David Koepp (DK): Steven came to me with this idea that was both deeply personal and yet global in its themes. It’s a story about memory, love, and the choices we make. As for what makes it different, I’d say it’s the blend of genres. We’re drawing from drama, comedy, and even a touch of suspense.Plus, it’s always exciting to create a new world and characters from scratch.
A Summer to Remember
A: This film is part of a remarkable lineup in summer 2026. How do you think your film will stand out in such a crowded season?
SS: First off,it’s an astonishing honor to be alongside such highly anticipated films. I think what sets our film apart is its focus on character and emotion. It’s a story that will make you laugh, cry, and see the world a little differently. And it’s all wrapped up in a visually stunning package – David’s script is allowing us to explore some really exciting cinematic territory.
Looking Ahead
A: both of you have commented on the importance of promoting cinema-going in the face of streaming services. How do you think this film – and your careers as a whole – contribute to that mission?
DK: Steven and I both love going to the movies, and we want to create experiences that bring audiences back to theaters. This film is designed to be seen on the biggest screen possible – it’s got spectacle, but at its heart, it’s a human story. As for our careers,we both continue to push boundaries and experiment with different genres and formats. We hope that by doing so, we inspire others to do the same.
With this tantalizing insight into Spielberg and Koepp’s next collaboration, one thing is clear: audiences are in for a treat when this “summer event” film hits theaters in 2026.
