Vienna (OTS) – The Bundesheer competitive athletes won three medals in artistic swimming at the World Swimming Championships in Fukuoka, Japan.

Corporal Vasiliki Alexandri secured the silver medal in the technical and free program with a nearly flawless performance. She only had to admit defeat to local hero Yukiko Inui. “I’m actually completely speechless and just happy. I knew I might do it in terms of difficulty and level and I might do it if I swam clean. And now twice world championship silver. It’s actually unbelievable,” says the native Greek.

Her two twin sisters, Anna-Maria and Eirini-Marina Alexandri, took revenge in the duet of the free program for the controversial penalty in the first competition and won the gold medal just ahead of the favored Chinese.

“These historical medals from the soldiers of the Army Sports Center give us great pleasure. It’s nice to see that the hard work of our athletes has been rewarded with medals. These successes show the importance of the federal army’s support system in the Austrian sports landscape, which produces great athletes,” said Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner.

The Army Sports Center has been promoting Austrian competitive sport with its ten Army competitive sports centers since 1962. Every year, up to 495 people, 20 of them in disabled sports, are part of the Army Sports support program. Traditionally, army sport has numerous participants in major sporting events such as the Olympic Games, European and World Championships.
