This true hockey enthusiast, who had participated in the Montreal-Quebec series and who was still active at the senior level before receiving the news that he was suffering from cancer of unknown primary origin with metastases to the bones, died at the age of 45. On January 19, moreover, Décor Mercier de Montmagny, for whom Groleau played before illness, retired his jersey at number 87.

A big supporter of the Nordiques, he had the chance to meet Makar on January 15, before the meeting between the Avalanche and the Canadiens at the Bell Centre.

“He’s a nice guy, he answered my questions, it was incredible,” he said in an interview with TVA Nouvelles.

Last fall, the father learned that the diagnosis had become more serious, and that metastases had reached his spine “all the way to the head,” he explained in the same interview.

“I’m going to fight, I don’t want to die right away. When I’m no longer able, I’m going to raise my hand. I know there is not long left,” he continued.
