Dubai: UAE’s Sultan Al Neyadi became the first Arab traveler to walk in space. Neyadi left the space station with companion Steven Bowen for a nearly 7-hour mission. The mission started from 5.11 pm on Friday.

The first step is to convert the spacesuits to battery power. Fellow astronauts Frank Rubio and Woody Hooberg helped Sultan don spacesuits known as extravehicular mobility units. “Congratulations Sultan, you made history,” Woody Hooberg said.

Eight-time spacewalker Steven Bowen was the first to emerge from the hatch at around 5.40am. He was wearing a red striped suit. Both wore different suits to identify them. After confirming that both were safe, the work started.

Both were in constant contact with NASA’s ground control team. The control team monitored things like oxygen level, water cooling and battery power. Both have successfully completed the work of installing solar panels. Meanwhile, they were unable to complete a second mission to remove an old part of the radio frequency group following the ISS ran into trouble removing the bolts attached to the antenna. Spacewalk is one of the most dangerous activities performed by astronauts.
