Surprising Encounter: A Royal Crane Takes Belgium by Storm on National Holiday

On this national holiday, another “crowned” head has obviously decided to steal the show from the Belgian royal family… It is a royal crane, also called “grey crowned crane” in English. The volatile (we presume in any case that it is the same) was first seen in Amay on Thursday. Then in Couthuin this Friday. Frédéric Gebbia lives not far from the Couthin town hall and this morning he was woken several times by the cries of an animal that he might not identify. “It was a loud, deep and high-pitched cry at the same time, a “wow-wow”, he describes. But I looked out the window, I saw nothing. Then, I received a message from my neighbor with a photo of a crane taken with his phone, asking me if I had a new pet. I then left the house with my camera and, surprised, a royal crane was placed on my chimney!

Escaped from an animal park?

What is especially surprising is that the crowned crane absolutely does not live in its natural state in Belgium since it is a sub-Saharan species (it is even the national symbol of Uganda and is represented on the country’s flag and coat of arms). It doesn’t migrate either. Did she escape from an animal park?

This would seem to be plausible, but in any case it does not come from the Petit Parc de Ben-Ahin, where only common cranes and demoiselle cranes are housed, nor from Pairi Daiza. “Pairi Daiza is indeed home to two royal cranes,” comments Claire Gilissen, the park’s press manager. But they are both currently in their large aviary and are doing wonderfully. »

The bird did not escape from Mont Mosan or the Wild World of Aywaille either. “There are also a lot of private individuals who raise or collect birds of this type, comments the aquatic director, Ronald Renson. Some do it very well, but sometimes all it takes is a storm and a tree that falls on an aviary and breaks it, or an aviary that opens, or a less careful young breeder…”

The mystery therefore remains intact for the moment…
