SwayvoTwain: ‘HookahSmoke’ Signals a New Vibe After Reflective Single ‘DoveSoar’

Columbia, South Carolina-bred artist SwayvoTwain has released his new single, “HookahSmoke,” marking a shift in sound from his previous, more introspective work. The track, which arrived Saturday, February 14th, with production handled by Mannie House, leans into a celebratory, club-ready vibe, signaling a new direction for the rising artist. This release follows SwayvoTwain’s deeply personal single, “DoveSoar,” which explored themes of loss and legacy.

The new single represents a deliberate move towards a more upbeat and energetic soundscape. SwayvoTwain, who has been gaining recognition for his emotionally resonant music, explained that his goal is to create songs that evoke feeling, regardless of genre. “Every interview I do, they ask, ‘What kind of music do you build?’ And I never know what to say. I wouldn’t really put [it] in a genre, but I do make songs that give you a feeling,” he said, as reported by REVOLT. “Whether it’s good, bad, or makes you reflect, the goal is just to make you feel SOMETHING. If you do that, then my job is done.”

“HookahSmoke” immediately establishes a “back of the club” atmosphere, with lyrics reflecting a confident and luxurious lifestyle. SwayvoTwain confidently raps, “Big ole playa, you can tell it in my pinky ring / Big ole section, man, this right here fit for a king,” setting the tone for a track designed for a night out. The chorus hints at potential romance, with the simple question, “Baby girl, what you on?”

The contrast between “HookahSmoke” and “DoveSoar” is significant. “DoveSoar” was a deeply personal tribute to SwayvoTwain’s late parents, Angie Stone and D’Angelo, grappling with themes of loss, faith, and survival. The lyrics of “DoveSoar” included a poignant plea: “Promise me one thing, please don’t let go of my hand… / How the hell you gon’ leave me all alone?” REVOLT notes that “HookahSmoke” demonstrates SwayvoTwain’s ability to embrace the present moment without feeling the demand to constantly explain himself.

Prior to the release of “HookahSmoke,” SwayvoTwain shared preview clips on social media, including a tribute to D’Angelo on what would have been his 52nd birthday, February 11th. He referenced a quote from D’Angelo himself – “I never claimed I do neo-soul… I do black music” – before sharing his own artistic philosophy.

SwayvoTwain’s music is available on various platforms, including Tidal and YouTube Music. His Instagram profile, @1swayvotwain, currently boasts over 70,000 followers.

As SwayvoTwain continues to evolve his sound, it will be engaging to see how he balances his introspective songwriting with his newfound embrace of more upbeat, club-focused tracks. The release of “HookahSmoke” suggests a willingness to explore different facets of his artistry and connect with audiences on multiple levels. The artist’s next moves will likely reveal further exploration of this dynamic range.
