A bit into the first half of the bronze medal match between Sweden and Germany, the game suddenly stopped.
The 19,500 spectators in the stands fell silent at the same time as the doctors of both teams rushed from their place on the bench to the other side of the field and up into the stands.
Shortly followingwards, information came from the announcer in the Lanxess arena that it was a case of illness in the stands.
After a while, the person who received treatment was able to leave the stands to applause from the rest of the arena.
The person who received care was wearing a yellow shirt.
– As I understood it, it was an Italian man in a Swedish national team shirt. Nice that everything went well, and nice to see that both teams’ doctors were there quickly, says Sweden’s press manager Niclas Green.
The national team: “We are on your side”
Sweden won 34-31. A couple of hours following the final whistle, the national team posted a clip on social media where Andreas Palicka and Daniel Pettersson seek contact with the person.
– Thank you for the incredible support. We’re on your side and saw what happened. We are all keeping our fingers crossed that you feel as well as you can, says Palicka in the clip.
The national team now wants to hand over a shirt and a pennant to the person.
– We are grateful that you come to the hall and support us. As captain, I want to say that it is an immense pride that we can hand this over to you and we wish you all the best, says team captain Palicka.
The morning following the bronze match, there was an update from the national team. There, the supporter, who is called Antonio and comes from Caserta outside Naples, meets Andreas Palicka in connection with the team’s closing dinner on Sunday evening.
