Syria announces that its air defenses confronted “Israeli missiles” in the vicinity of Damascus

Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – The Syrian authorities announced, on Thursday, that their air defenses “repelled an aggression with missiles targeting some points in the vicinity of the city of Damascus, and brought down some of them,” accusing Israel of being behind the attack, which rarely acknowledges attacks on Syria.

The Syrian News Agency (SANA) quoted a military source as saying: “The Israeli enemy carried out an air aggression targeting some points in the vicinity of the city of Damascus, and the air defenses confronted the aggression’s missiles, and shot down some of them, and the losses were limited to material.”

Israel did not issue any statement regarding the raids, nor did it respond to the Syrian announcement.

On Friday, the Syrian authorities announced that their air defenses had intercepted “missiles from the northeastern direction of Lake Tiberias, targeting some points in the vicinity of the city of Damascus.”

It was the first attack on the Syrian capital since the September 16 Israeli air strike on Damascus International Airport, which killed five Syrian soldiers and forced the airport to close due to damage, according to the Syrian Defense Ministry.

And in August, another Israeli attack targeted Aleppo airport in northern Syria, according to Syrian state media.
