Szoboszlai: Right-Back Role, Family Life & Liverpool Form | Premier League News

Dominik Szoboszlai, the Hungarian captain and midfielder for Liverpool, is enjoying a standout season in the Premier League despite frequently being deployed in an unfamiliar role. The 25-year-old has demonstrated adaptability, stepping in at right-back when needed, while also experiencing significant personal milestones, including marriage and the recent arrival of his daughter.

Szoboszlai recently discussed his experiences in an interview with humorist Musimbe Dávid Dennis, published on Red Bull’s Instagram account on Monday. He detailed his perspective on playing out of position and shared insights into his family life with his wife, Borka Buzsik, and their six-month-old daughter. The midfielder’s willingness to contribute wherever needed has become a hallmark of his game for Liverpool.

“I think midfield is the most difficult position, because you can be challenged from the front, from the back, and from the sides,” Szoboszlai explained. “If you play right-back, it’s obvious that you won’t be challenged from the right side, because that’s where the spectators are. So you have the whole field in front of you, you can see everything. And because you’re used to constantly looking around in midfield, to see what’s happening around you, when you go out to the wing, to right-back, it feels like a ‘vacation.’ You have time, you see everything, you see everyone, and it’s easier. If they put a right-back in midfield, it would be like putting me there.”

When asked if he enjoys playing in the defensive position, Szoboszlai initially responded, “Necessity is a great master.” He elaborated, stating, “It all comes from the mindset that there are no excuses. You have to adapt to the highest level. If I do it, I do it properly. I could go to the coach now and say I don’t want to play there, but this isn’t a wish list. If you play for Liverpool and they tell you to play right-back, you play right-back. The coach knows I’m best in midfield, and I am best there, but if the team needs me on the right side, I’ll play there and give my maximum there too.”

Personal Reflections on Family and Growth

Szoboszlai also offered a glimpse into his personal life, discussing his relationship with his wife, Borka Buzsik. He described a more reserved expression of affection within his family, influenced by his own upbringing. “We are not very affectionate, we are not the kind of people who show their love outwardly with my father, but we both know it. I never had a demand for it, I probably inherited it from him. His parents died early (aged 9 and 12 respectively), which certainly had an impact on him, and therefore on me. I also found it difficult to show affection – even in my relationships – but since I met Borka, I have changed a lot ” he shared. He added that even now, it sometimes feels insufficient, but he reminds his wife to look at how far they’ve come.

The conversation then turned to his six-month-old daughter. “I always wanted a daughter,” Szoboszlai said with a smile, expressing his enjoyment of fatherhood. “She’s still very compact, for now, all she needs is to be with me. I would like her to be a professional athlete, but definitely not a footballer! At least that’s what I think now. Maybe because I know what it entails and how much you have to go through, but I would like her to play tennis. But later she will do whatever sport she wants.”

Liverpool’s League Standing and Szoboszlai’s Impact

Currently, Liverpool sits sixth in the Premier League table with 45 points after 27 matches, level on points with Manchester United. Arsenal leads the league with 53 points, followed closely by Manchester City with 48 points. Szoboszlai’s contributions have been vital to Liverpool’s performance, even while adapting to different positions on the pitch.

Szoboszlai and Buzsik married on March 25, 2025, in a private ceremony at the Four Seasons Hotel in Budapest, according to Goal.com. The couple announced the birth of their daughter six weeks ago, sharing a touching photo of their hands on social media.

Buzsik, who graduated from Corvinus University in Budapest, maintains a relatively private online presence with 84,000 followers on Instagram. Szoboszlai previously dated model and former tennis player Fanni Gecsek before his relationship with Buzsik.

As Liverpool continues its pursuit in the Premier League, Szoboszlai’s versatility and commitment will undoubtedly be crucial. The team’s upcoming fixtures will test their resolve as they aim to climb the table and challenge for a top-four finish. The dynamic between Szoboszlai’s on-field performance and his growing family life will continue to be a compelling narrative throughout the season.
