Breaking: Semarang-Demak Toll Road Extension Proposed Amidst Flood Crisis
Semarang, Indonesia – In a bid to mitigate the devastating effects of coastal flooding, the Central Java management has formally proposed a 10-kilometer extension to the under-construction Semarang-Demak toll road. The existing Semarang-Demak toll road project aims to improve connectivity, but faces new challenges with increasing sea levels.
The proposal, valued at Rp 1.7 trillion (approximately US$104.48 million), has been submitted to Public Works Minister Dody Hanggoro by Central Java deputy Governor Taj Yasin.
Urgent Need for Coastal Protection
Deputy Governor Taj Yasin emphasized that this project answers the urgent pleas of residents in Demak’s coastal areas, who have for years been grappling with relentless tidal floods.
“This project was requested by residents in Demak’s coastal areas who have long suffered from recurring tidal floods,” taj stated, highlighting that the extension aims to alleviate flooding in 22 villages spanning four districts.
The proposed extension would stretch eastward towards the Jepara regency border, traversing through Sayung, Karangtengah, Bonang, and Wedung districts.
Government Review and Approval Process
Minister Dody Hanggoro assured that his ministry would promptly assess the proposal before forwarding it to President Prabowo Subianto and the House of Representatives for final approval.
“We will process this proposal. We don’t want people to continue suffering and to lose precious memories as their land and homes were claimed by the sea,” Dody stated, underlining the government’s commitment to addressing the crisis.
The initial 27-kilometer semarang-Demak toll road project, initiated in 2022, aimed to enhance connectivity between Semarang, Central Java’s capital, and the neighboring Demak regency.
