Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich is still hoping to reach a legal decision to start the procedures for the sale of English club Chelsea, at a time when news reports indicated that the UK government has not yet agreed on any terms of the deal so far.
And the British news agency “PA Media” reported today that Abramovich’s lawyers and the British government are continuing talks on how to deal with the London club’s debts of 1.5 billion pounds ($ 1.86 billion) to the Russian billionaire.
Abramovich had wanted to cancel those debts, but UK government sanctions prevented this process as his accounts were frozen.
The agency revealed that the British government had raised repeated concerns that Abramovich would back down from his pledge to waive those loans, despite assurances and detailed planning from the Chelsea owner.
The same source added that the government is seeking legally binding assurances that Abramovich will not benefit in any way from the Chelsea sale.
The agency noted that Abramovich’s lawyers are confident that their recent proposals will be accepted by the British government.
American billionaire Todd Boyle, co-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers club, concluded a deal to buy Chelsea FC for 4.25 billion pounds in the early hours of May 7, following winning the highly competitive and unique public race.
Boehle met Chelsea Football Club manager Thomas Tuchel and Emma Hayes, the club’s women’s coach, last week and now hopes to complete the acquisition with little delay.
The Premier League must give final confirmation of the club’s sale of Boley through owner-manager tests, before the government issues a new license to allow the sale to take place.
The government’s approval of the sale should give the green light to Abramovich’s plan to donate the proceeds to a new charity.
It is noteworthy that Abramovich, 55, officially put Chelsea for sale in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and then the United Kingdom government imposed sanctions once morest him on March 10, claiming that it had found evidence of links between him and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Chelsea’s temporary management license expires on May 31, with that date considered a strict deadline for the sale.
