NORTHAMPTON,MA – Cooley Dickinson Hospital is nearing its fundraising goal for a extensive Emergency department expansion and renovation, thanks to a $850,000 matching challenge announced in recent weeks. The drive aims to complete the “Transforming Emergency Care: The Campaign for the Cooley Dickinson Emergency Department.”
The initiative has gained considerable traction through donations from local businesses, including Diversified LLC and All States Materials Group, alongside a wave of contributions from individual community members. These early investors hope their generosity will inspire further support before the campaign concludes.
“We are deeply grateful that some of our most dedicated supporters have stepped forward to amplify our fundraising efforts during this crucial phase,” said Diane dukette, chief Development Officer. “Their collective commitment to match every dollar donated, up to $850,000, is a testament to the importance of this project to our community.”
The $26 million campaign directly addresses the increasing demands on the hospital’s emergency services. Patient visitation has nearly doubled since the 1970s, rising from 17,000 annually to almost 34,000 in recent years. The planned expansion will increase the department’s footprint by 40%, adding 32 patient rooms and dedicated spaces for behavioral health care. A state-of-the-art CT scanning and imaging suite will also be included.
“This project will dramatically improve the patient experience by streamlining care and reducing wait times,” explained Sarah Burgess,Nurse Director in the Emergency Department. “The renovation will reconfigure our space for better coordination among the medical team, leading to more efficient and effective treatment.”
The hospital’s facilities, nursing, leadership, and physician teams are operating concurrently, with a focus on minimizing disruption to patient care. The initial phase of the renovation is already complete, with the expanded section now open and operational while work continues in the previous space.
“When finalized, coupled with our remarkable care team, we’re confident we’ll have the premier Emergency Department in the region,” Burgess added.
As of today, the campaign has raised over $12.7 million. With less than four months remaining and the generous matching challenge, every donation carries even greater weight. The outpouring of support from the community, ranging from a ample bequest from the estate of Rob Brooks to a donation from a young Amherst girl who contributed her lemonade stand profits, underscores the collective commitment to healthcare.
