HOUSTON – Houston Dynamo 2 attacker Mattheo Dimareli has been recognized as the MLS NEXT Rising Star of Matchday 2, the league announced on March 9, 2026. The 16-year-old forward’s performance was central to Dynamo 2’s commanding 4-0 victory over Tacoma Defiance at SaberCats Stadium on Sunday night, marking a significant moment in his young career.
The win showcased Dynamo 2’s attacking prowess and defensive solidity, securing their second clean sheet of the season. Tacoma Defiance managed only one shot on target from eight attempts, and failed to register a single shot in the first half, while Houston fired eight. This decisive victory propels Dynamo 2 into a strong position in the Western Conference standings.
Dimareli’s standout performance included a brace – his first career goals in MLS NEXT Pro – and was instrumental in breaking down the Tacoma defense. The first goal arrived in the 41st minute, a product of intricate teamwork involving Austin Brummett and Nick Markanich. Markanich initiated the play with a run down the right flank, exchanging passes with Brummett before delivering a precise pass to Dimareli, who finished with a left-footed shot.
He doubled the lead just before halftime, again finding the back of the net thanks to a well-placed pass from Markanich. Markanich’s two assists highlighted his own impactful performance in the match. The team continued its offensive surge in the second half, extending their advantage.
Diego Gonzalez found Gavin Wolff with a pinpoint pass in the 77th minute, allowing Wolff to head the ball past the Tacoma goalkeeper for the third goal. Just five minutes later, Austin Brummett added another, finishing a first-time strike following a pass from Vinicius Rodrigues da Silva, completing the rout.
Dynamo 2 now sits second in the Western Conference with six points from two wins and no losses (2-0-0 record). They are currently tied for third in the league for total goals scored, with six goals to their name, according to MLS NEXT Pro.
Dynamo 2 will next face Portland Timbers2 on Sunday, March 15, at SaberCats Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 6:00 p.m. CT. Fans can secure free tickets to all Dynamo Dos home matches through Houston Dynamo FC’s Tixr platform.
