In addition to photovoltaic, wind and hydroelectric power plants, energy production from biomass plays a crucial role in Austria on the path to a renewable and independent energy future. Since biomass is also imported into Europe and not all member states have as strict forestry laws as Austria, the European Union provided evidence for forest biomass in Directive (EU) 2018/2001 on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources (RED II). on sustainable forestry is mandatory. In the future, this will require the certification of all forest biomass that is used as an energy source in larger heating plants. A corresponding transition period in national legislation expires at the end of the year. The problem is that there is currently no system for administrative processing and a sufficient range of certification bodies in Austria.

State Parliament calls for commitment to biomass | Farmers’ Association of Lower Austria (BBN), September 21, 2023

Lower Austrian Farmers Association Director Nemecek: “Protect the climate and use domestic energy potential”
St.Pölten (OTS) – In the state parliament session on September 21, 2023, the Lower Austrian state parliament called for a clear commitment from the federal government to biomass.
For Lower Austrian Farmers’ Association director Paul Nemecek, this is an important decision, especially in the interests of local forest farmers and climate protection: “Our farmers are dependent on the weather, climate and fertile soil. Climate change is endangering their livelihoods. Lower Austria is committed to active climate policy. We use existing domestic energy potential such as the forest and thereby protect our future.”
Farmers as a crucial partner in climate protection
With the adoption of the resolution in the state parliament, a further step in the demand paper of the Lower Austrian Farmers’ Association was implemented. “We are calling for the energy transition and a focus on renewable energies. Our farmers are a crucial partner here. “No matter whether it’s the wind power in the field, the PV systems on the roofs of the farms, stables and warehouses and also the management of the forest as a renewable energy source in biomass,” concludes Nemecek.

Litschauer/Greens on nuclear power plant lifetime extension: France is acting irresponsibly
2023-08-21 16:30:10
Greens: EU Commission must ensure cross-border EIA
Vienna (OTS) – “For me it is incomprehensible how France can extend the service life of an ancient nuclear power plant without a cross-border environmental impact assessment – as the ESPOO Convention actually envisages. The last two years in particular have impressively shown how error-prone the French power plant park is and how many unexpected corrosion problems the EDF has to contend with,” says Martin Litschauer, anti-nuclear spokesman for the Greens, regarding France’s plans, the term of one of the first to extend French nuclear power plants to 50 years. “I therefore call on the EU Commission to take action and ensure a cross-border EIA for these old reactors in which everyone can participate.”
“The numerous cracks in the pipelines of the nuclear power plant should actually be warning enough and show how quickly this old power plant park can fail. Instead, a material experiment is now being started for a period of 50 years, for which the reactors were not originally built. In addition, contaminated water from reprocessing is pumped into the sea and even more nuclear waste is produced, for which France still has no solution ready,” criticizes Litschauer.

With the power of the sun for green energy: Wien Energie is expanding photovoltaics significantly
2023-07-30 10:00:16
Photovoltaic output from Wien Energie increases to 116 megawatts in the first half of the year – 60 additional systems in Vienna and several large-scale photovoltaic projects in operation by the end of 2023
Vienna (OTS) – Wien Energie is also investing intensively in the expansion of photovoltaics this year: in the first half of 2023, Wien Energie already put numerous photovoltaic systems into operation, including as part of the Vienna solar power offensive on the roof of the Wiener Linien main workshop in Simmering and the port of Vienna. The total output of the Wien Energie photovoltaic systems thus increases to 116 megawatts. The company has installed over 332,300 photovoltaic modules in over 400 systems. Overall, these systems can produce green electricity for the equivalent of around 58,000 Viennese households. As part of the City of Vienna’s solar power offensive, the focus is particularly on the roofs of public buildings such as public transport stations, hospitals, schools, sports halls and nursing homes. By the end of the year, around 60 photovoltaic systems will be installed here by Wien Energie, which have been intensively prepared, particularly in the last six months.
„The roofs are the greatest potential for sustainable energy generation in Vienna. These will become small eco-power plants in the middle of the city. With every new photovoltaic system, Vienna becomes more of a solar energy city! By 2030, as part of the Vienna solar power offensive, we want to generate enough energy from photovoltaics in the city to be able to supply the equivalent of 400,000 households in an environmentally friendly way. We are actively working together with Wien Energie to achieve these ambitious goals“, explains Peter Hanke, City Councilor for Economics and Wiener Stadtwerke.
„In order to achieve the climate goals, we must massively expand green energy production. We have therefore made it our goal to generate 1,000 megawatts of renewable electricity by 2030. We are therefore gradually picking up the pace. Photovoltaic systems on roofs alone will not be sufficient to cover the demand for renewable electricity in the future. We must use suitable areas throughout Austria in order to achieve the climate goals. We currently have more than 500 systems in the planning stage and around a third of them in the concrete planning stage in order to implement our expansion goals in the long term“, says the Chairman of the Wien Energie Management Board, Michael Strebl.
Construction of large ecological photovoltaic systems for Wien Energie
Specifically, in the first half of the year, Wien Energie began building two ecological large-scale photovoltaic systems. Two photovoltaic open spaces with a total output of around 30 megawatts are being built on 14 hectares each in Styria – in the municipality of Ratten and in the municipality of Gosdorf. The special thing regarding it: In order to promote biodiversity, Wien Energie specifically plants grasses and bushes and implements ecological measures such as stone and wood structures. In addition, nesting boxes provide a natural shelter for insects, reptiles and birds.
Sunny highlight: facade photovoltaics
In addition, Wien Energie is also testing innovative concepts such as facade photovoltaics: Recently, a vertically mounted photovoltaic system has been installed on the facade of a data center run by WienIT, the internal IT and business service provider of Wiener Stadtwerke. This produces green electricity for the building, which means that the previously free façade is now used ecologically. The project is intended to generate knowledge regarding their impact and to develop follow-up projects.
